When you’re having some roofing work done, you’ve likely heard your roofing contractor throw around the terms “soffit” and “fascia”. For the uninitiated, these two are very important parts of your roof as they not only enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal, but they also prevent water from infiltrating your home and causing moisture damage. But what exactly are these roofing components?
Soffits
Soffits are installed along the edges of your roof and adjacent to the walls of your home. As stated before, they prevent water from being blown into your home. This is especially needed if you live in an area that get high winds when it rains. However, keep in mind that not all properties come with soffits installed on them so you may have to install one if your home didn’t have a soffit when you bought it.
In the past, soffits used to be made with timber products. Unfortunately, since it was easy for timber products to rot and decay, the past few decades have seen timber replaced with aluminum and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) versions for a more durable and cost-effective soffit material that can last a long time.
Fascia
Compared to the soffits, on the other hand, the fascia is a roof board that’s often found at the edge of the property’s rafters and is usually installed to protect the roof’s overall structure and the building’s interior from being exposed to the elements. In essence, unlike the soffit, the main purpose of the fascia is to improve your home’s aesthetic instead of focusing on preventing water from entering your home.
