Weather can be unpredictable. Storms can still occur even when they’re “out of season”, leaving your roof looking the worse for wear. If the weather reports warn of a coming storm, there are a few steps you can take to prevent – or at least minimize – the storm damage to your roofing system.

1. Schedule a comprehensive roof inspection. Any existing problems your roof may have can only worsen during a major weather event. To reduce the severity of damage suffered by your roofing system, have trusted local roofers perform a comprehensive assessment of its condition. Should they discover any developing issues, have them dealt with promptly so they don’t become a huge and expensive problem later on.
2. Place a protective sheet over the roof surface. This is especially important during a windstorm. High winds can get under the asphalt shingles and lift them up, causing loss of adhesion with the roof deck. Once this happens, the shingles become more susceptible to blow-offs, leaving some sections of your roof “bald” and leak-prone. You can prevent this, however, by placing a protective material over the roof surface, such as plywood.
3. Keep your gutters clean. Your gutters channel runoff away from your home to keep it safe against water exposure. But they won’t be able to do their job if they’re clogged. In fact, rainwater can back up inside the system and place unnecessary strain on your roof. In most cases, water can also seep through the fascia board and create leaks. Cleaning your gutters can be a pain, sure, but the task can help protect your roof against damage if there’s a storm coming.
